Storyline
Mrs. Montague and Mr. Capulet (Julie Walters and Richard Wilson) are two eldery people who despise each other. When they leave the garden, objects come alive in both their gardens. The Montague garden is filled with blue garden gnomes, and the Capulet garden houses red garden gnomes. Later, both blue and red gnomes attend a lawnmower race. Representing the blues is Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and representing the reds is Tybalt (Jason Statham). During the race, it looks like Gnomeo is winning; however, Tybalt cheats and wins the race, destroying Gnomeo's lawnmower. Gnomeo and his best friend Benny (Matt Lucas) insult Tybalt for cheating, but Tybalt ignores them.
Later that night, Gnomeo and Benny, wanting revenge, infiltrate the red garden in disguise, intending to spray the reds' lawnmower with blue spray paint. With Tybalt sleeping and Tybalt's best friend, Fawn (Ozzy Osbourne), playing cards with small red gnomes, it looks like there are no flaws in their plan, until Benny foolishly sprays Tybalt's well and accidentally triggers a security light in the process, alerting the red gnomes to attack. Fortunately, both escape; however, Gnomeo ends up in a different garden. He bumps into Juliet (Emily Blunt), the daughter of Lord Redbrick (Michael Caine). Juliet is looking for the last remaining orchid in the greenhouse, planning to use it to beautify the red garden. Gnomeo is intrigued by her, and reaches for the orchid as she is about to complete the garden, and they fall in love in the process. During this time, they discover they are from opposing clans. When they both go back to their gardens, Juliet tells her friend Nanette (Ashley Jensen) about her newfound love, much to her surprise. Nanette states that the relationship is romantically tragic.
Gnomeo and Juliet then have secret meetings in a secret garden, where they meet a pink plastic flamingo named Featherstone (Jim Cummings). He supports and encourages their love, and the two begin to meet regularly. Though when the two of them are getting ready for a date, Juliet's father introduces her to Paris (Stephen Merchant), a red gnome that Nanette has fallen for, though Juliet manages to get away.
Later, when the two return back to their gardens, Gnomeo finds his mother (Maggie Smith), who is distraught after the reds infiltrated the garden and destroyed the plant Gnomeo's deceased father planted. The blues want Gnomeo to take revenge on the reds, and he realizes that he cannot refuse unless he tells his secret. He tunnels underneath to reach the red garden, but just as he is about to spray the prized flowers of the reds, Juliet sees him. He backs out suddenly, telling Benny that the nozzle on the spraying bottle was jammed.
When he and Juliet meet up again, they briefly argue until Featherstone stops them, telling them that other peoples' hate destroyed his love. He and his girlfriend were separated when the two people living in the house, where their garden was, got divorced. After he has explained this, Gnomeo and Juliet apologize, but when they are about to kiss, Benny sees them, distracts them, then runs into the alleyway, where Tybalt is waiting with his lawnmower. Tybalt drives at Benny and knocks his hat clean off. Tybalt fights Gnomeo on his lawnmower, but he is destroyed when crashing into a wall. The reds attempt to attack Gnomeo, but Juliet, to the surprise of her father and clan, defends Gnomeo, saying that she loves him. A woman suddenly jogs along, so all gnomes become still and inconspicuous. Gnomeo ends up on a road, and everyone believes he was run over by a truck. Juliet's father glues her to her fountain because he does not want to lose her like her mother. Gnomeo's pet, a mushroom named Shroom, is left alone and goes on the road, where he realizes that what appeared to be Gnomeo is actually a broken blue teapot, and that Gnomeo is still alive. Gnomeo eventually ends up in a park, and climbs onto a statue of William Shakespeare (Patrick Stewart) and tells him his story. Shakespeare tells Gnomeo that his story is very similar to Romeo and Juliet and that it is likely Gnomeo's will have a sad ending as well. Shroom and Featherstone come to find him.
Benny, meanwhile, buys a large lawnmower online, called the Terrafirminator, to get revenge on the Red Gnomes, despite Shroom trying to convince him that Gnomeo is still alive. The Terrafirminator goes out of control and destroys most of the two gardens. Gnomeo makes it back to Juliet to try to un-glue her, but he is unable to. She tells him to go, but he refuses, and the two share a kiss just as the lawnmower crashes into the fountain, self-destructing in the process. Everyone believes that both Gnomeo and Juliet are dead. Lord Redbrick and Lady Blueberry, both realizing that their feud was responsible for this, decide to call a truce. Suddenly, both Gnomeo and Juliet climb out of the rubble and are both fine. The movie ends happily with the two of them getting married on a purple lawnmower, which symbolizes the truce.

Storyline
Set in the 14th century, three women accused of witchcraft are hanged by a priest. The priest performs a ritual to prevent the bodies from coming back to life. While successfully completing the ritual for two of the bodies, the third takes on a demonic appearance and kills the priest. Meanwhile, Teutonic knights Behmen of Bleiruck (Cage) and Felson (Perlman) are engaged in a (fictional) crusade, taking part in several different battles throughout the 1330s, eventually taking part in the Smyrniote crusades. After witnessing the massacre of civilians during the 1344 capture of Smyrna, the two knights choose to desert the Order and the crusade and return to Germany.
While traveling through Styria, they encounter the grotesque sight of people infected with the Black Death and soon discover that the Holy Roman Empire has been swept by the plague. Upon entering the medieval town of Marburg, the two try to conceal their identity as deserters, but are revealed as knights by the crest on Behmen's sword, and he and Felson are arrested. They are taken to Cardinal D'Ambroise, who is infected with the plague. The Cardinal asks the knights to escort an alleged witch suspected of causing the plague, to a remote monastery where an elite group of monks reside, capable of determining if the girl is truly a witch. If she is found guilty, the monks know a sacred ritual that can cancel her powers, and stop the plague that is devastating Europe. The two knights agree under the condition that she will be given a fair trial and that the charges of desertion against them are dropped. The Cardinal agrees, and they set out accompanied by a priest Debelzeq, Kay of Wollenbarth, a young altar boy who wants to become a knight like his deceased father, Eckhart, a knight whose family were killed by the plague, and the well-traveled swindler Hagamar who is serving as their guide to the monastery in return for a pardon. The witch, a young girl later identified as Anna, shows hatred towards Debelzeq and forms a bond with Behmen.
Shortly after setting off, the group camp for the night, and Eckhart volunteers to watch the witch for the first night. After a while, Debelzeq comes to relieve Eckhart, who decides to remain with him. He tells Debelzeq about his daughter Mila, who resembled Anna. When Eckhart gets up to leave, Anna becomes hysterical at the prospect of being left alone with the priest, attacking him and grabbing his key to the cage. She escapes and flees toward a nearby village. The search for her leads the group to a mass grave, where Eckhart has visions of his dead daughter. Running after the visions, he impales himself on Kay's sword and dies. When they recapture her, the tearful Anna explains that she only ran away for fear of Debelzeq. One man down, the group become less trusting of Anna. The group manage to successfully cross a rickety rope bridge, during which Anna saves Kay from falling to his death by grabbing him with one hand, showing an unnatural strength. The group enter the dark forest called Wormwood, where Hagamar attempts to kill Anna so the group can go home, only to be stopped by the others. Anna appears to summon wolves, who chase the group and kill Hagamar. An enraged Behmen tries to kill Anna, but is stopped by Felson, who points out that the monastery is in sight.
Arriving at the monastery, the men find all of the monks have been killed by the plague but locate the Key of Solomon, an ancient book filled with holy rituals used to defeat evil. The men confront Anna, with Debelzeq beginning to perform a ritual used on witches. However, as Anna begins precisely recanting stories from Behmen's past, Debelzeq comes to the realization that she's not a witch, and begins frantically performing an exorcism. However, the demon that is possessing Anna reveals itself and melts the metal. The demon effortlessly fights off the knights, but when Debelzeq throws a vial of holy water on it, it flies away out of sight. As the men search for the demon, they come to the realization that it isn't trying to escape, but is trying to destroy the book so that nothing can stop it. When they find a room where the monks were writing copies of the book, the demon appears, destroys the copies and possesses the dead monks' bodies to use as weapons. The three men fight the possessed monks while Debelzeq continues the exorcism ritual. During the fight, the demon kills Debelzeq, then proceeds to kill Felson. Kay picks up the book and continues the ritual, while Behmen continues fighting the demon. Behmen is mortally wounded during the fight, but Kay is able to finish the ritual and the demon is obliterated, freeing Anna. Behmen asks Kay to keep Anna safe, then dies of his wounds.
Kay and Anna bury their fallen friends, and Anna requests that Kay tell her about the men who saved her; they depart from the monastery with the book in hand.

Storyline

The film is set in Dengfeng, Henan, during the warlord era of early Republican China. The warlord Hou Jie defeats a rival named Huo Long and seizes control of Dengfeng. Huo flees to Shaolin Temple to hide but Hou appears and shoots him. Hou ridicules the Shaolin monks before leaving.
Feeling disadvantageous with his sworn brother, Song Hu, Hou sets a trap for Song in a restaurant, under the guise of agreeing to his daughter's engagement to Song's son. Meanwhile, Hou's deputy, Cao Man, feeling that he was being used by Hou and that he deserves better, decides to betray Hou. Cao sends assassins to murder Hou and his family. Hou manages to fatally wound Song with his handgun, but Song still saves Hou to allow him to escape from the assassin's ambush before succumbing to his injuries. Hou manages to escape together with his daughter, but his daughter was severely injured when a carriage knocked her down while she is fleeing, and worsen when they fall off a cliff. Hou's wife is rescued by some passing-by Shaolin monks, who were stealing rice from the military granary to help the refugees living near the temple. In desperation, Hou brings his daughter to Shaolin, begging the monks to save her life, but it is too late and she dies of her injuries. Hou's wife blames him for the death of their daughter and leaves him. Hou attacks the monks in anger but is quickly subdued.
Hou becomes disillusioned and wanders near Shaolin, until he meets the cook monk Wudao, who provides him with food and shelter. Hou feels guilty for his past misdeeds and decides to become a monk and atone for his sins. During his stay in Shaolin, Hou gradually understands Shaolin's principles through study and practising martial arts, mends his ways and finds peace and enlightenment from his heart. One day, Hou overhears that Cao Man, who has taken control over his army, is oppressing the people by forcing them to unearth Chinese relics. Cao sells the relics to foreigners in exchange for advanced weaponry, after which he will have the labourers massacred to silence them. Hou shows up to save some labourers and exposes himself in the process.
When Cao hears that Hou is still alive, he leads his soldiers to the Shaolin temple to capture Hou. Hou volunteers to distract Cao while the monks secretly break into Cao's house to save the imprisoned labourers. The plan succeeds but Hou's senior, Jingneng, is brutally killed by Cao while buying time for his juniors to escape. Upon returning to the Shaolin temple, the monks decide that they need to evacuate the temple to avoid further trouble. Wudao leads the refugees away while Hou and the other monks remain behind to defend the temple. By then, Cao arrives with his troops and orders an attack on Shaolin. At the same time, the foreigners feel that they have been cheated and they bombard Shaolin with artillery, resulting in heavy casualties for both the Shaolin monks and Cao's forces. Hou defeats Cao in a fight and eventually sacrifices himself to save Cao from being crushed by a falling beam (returning the karma of Song's sacrifice to save Hou during Song's assassination) and falls into the Buddha statue's palm and dies peacefully, leaving Cao feeling guilty. On the other hand, the surviving monks succeed in overcoming the enemy and stopping the bombardment. Meanwhile, the retreating refugees turn back and start crying when they see the Shaolin Temple in ruins. Wudao tells them that the Shaolin spirit will continue to live in them even though the temple has been destroyed.
Afterwards, the scene cuts to an earlier period before the monks evacuate with the refugees, with Hou meeting with his wife in the temple for the last time. Hou passes the urn containing his daughter's cremated ashes to his wife, and she forgives Hou for his past, and accepts the fact that she can no longer be with him. Hou admits that Cao's present evil doings stems from his own past misdeeds, thus he is responsible in guiding Cao back to the correct path. The scene ends with the monks practicing martial arts under snowfall, hinting that the monks and refugees settled down once again.

Storyline

Apparently, Satan is a huge fan of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. How else can you explain the new exorcism film The Rite's last act channeling of that famous film character by the man who made him (in)famous in the first place. For most of this moronic horror movie's languid, limp pace, Anthony Hopkins's Father Lucas appears to be a doddering old fool who may or may not be a glorified con man. We get pathos, snatches of senility, and the distinct impression that this is one Man of God who has been battling Beelzebub for far too long. If it really were a serious attempt at addressing faith, perhaps The Rite would be more engaging. As it stands, it's yet another example of how Hollywood undersells religion for cheap thrills and even more mediocre chills.

Desperate to escape his father (Rutger Hauer) and the family mortuary, young Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) decides to run off and join the seminary. Four years later, he is seriously rethinking his vows. His mentor, Father Matthew (Toby Jones) suggests he join the Vatican's exorcist training program -- it's either that, or repay the Church the $100K it passed out in tuition. Without much choice, Michael is whisked off to Rome where he meets his instructor Father Xavier (Ciaran Hinds), as well as undercover reporter Angelina (Alice Braga). Of course, he doesn't believe in all this demonic possession nonsense, so as a last attempt at swaying his opinion, he is sent to work with Father Lucas (Hopkins). There, Michael learns the truth about exorcism, as well as God's plan for his life.

If audiences were archeologists, they might be able to find the value -- entertainment, intellectual, spiritual -- in this otherwise ridiculous sacramental mess. Even without the laughable "inspired by true events" tag at the beginning, The Rite randomizes its potential import to the point of outright ridiculousness. The movie takes itself so seriously, wanting to be so much more than a brisk cinematic battle between the powers of good and evil that it completely forgets why we enjoy the genre. The Rite is not remotely scary, failing its potential frights time and time again. It even finds a way to make an extended exorcism with an Oscar winner feel like a bad Saturday Night Live sketch.

Because his work as Thomas Harris's iconic villain remains so memorable, Hopkins can't help but sound like Lecter when he goes into malevolent mode. When taunting Michael, trying to get the already unsure seminarian to question himself even further, he slips right back into that old familiar faux American accent. He even incorporates goofy slang terminology like "Dude". All of this is supposed to be unnerving. It's actually unintentionally hilarious. As a matter of fact, The Rite is one of the more arch accidental comedies in a long time. Every time we are supposed to shiver in anticipation of another spine-tingling demonic attack, it's our funny bone that gets the workout instead.

This is because director Mikael Håfström (who did much better with Stephen King's 1408) can't seem to figure out the kind of film he wants to make. Instead of treating faith with reverence, he retrofits it into a bad plot twist. Instead of letting us know if Father Lucas is authentic or just a holy huckster, he keeps the issue confused and pointlessly vague. We don't care about Michael or his current crisis, and the notion of the Vatican purposefully preparing priests to be exorcists is washed away with a single expositional line. No matter the skill of the supporting players or the underlying intrigue in the idea, The Rite just fizzles. If William Friedkin's 1973 The Exorcist is the genre's benchmark, this is its punchline.

Storyline
It has been almost a decade since director Alan Mak and then-screenwriter Felix Chong combined forces with Andrew Lau to create the iconic crime thriller, INFERNAL AFFAIRS. Since then, Lau has cut the apron strings and Chong has graduated to take co-directorial credit on four films with Mak, as well as recently gaining recognition from the Hong Kong Film Awards for his first solo effort, ONCE A GANGSTER. After their little seen debut MIDNIGHT IN TOKYO back in 2005, the Mak/Chong team graduated to more high-profile projects, namely the Sammi Cheng vehicle LADY COP AND PAPA CROOK in 2008 and the solid, if unspectacular surveillance thriller OVERHEARD the following year. Now firmly cemented in Hong Kong's directorial A-list despite having yet delivered a genuinely great film, it seemed inevitable the couple would attempt a period epic, and who better to cast as deified General Guan Yu than the industry's current heavyweight champ, Donnie Yen in a film that is hands-down their best film to-date by a considerable margin.

The intensions of THE LOST BLADESMAN are best conveyed by the title of Luo Guanzhong's classic story, upon which the film is loosely based: Guan Yu Crossing Five Passes And Slaying Six Generals. With a title like that, Donnie on board as both star and Action Director, and a supporting cast that includes Andy On, Calvin Li and Wang Xuebing, audiences can rest assured the action quota in THE LOST BLADESMAN is set surprisingly high, with Donnie taking on entire armed divisions single-handed, as well as squaring off for a number of impressive one-on-one bouts. That said, those looking for another dose of IP MAN style sparring may be left wanting, as Guan Yu mostly fights with the guan dao spear (which was subsequently named after him). Over the course of the film, Donnie does fight with a variety of swords, spears and even a crossbow, but there is no hand-to-hand combat this time out.

While the film is brimming with action, there is a meaty drama at its core, given notable gravitas by the presence of Jiang Wen as the tyrannical Cao Cao, out to conquer all China in the name of the Han. After his forces are defeated at Xiapi, General Guan surrenders to Cao Cao, who attempts to recruit him. While Guan assists Cao Cao in an attack on mutual enemy Yuan Shao's troops, killing General Yan Liang (Chin Siu Hou), his loyalties remain with his sworn brother Liu Bei (Alex Fong). Out of respect, Cao Cao allows Guan Yu to leave peacefully, much to the displeasure of his advisors, who proceed to inform every general along Guan Yu's route to apprehend and kill the great warrior. For good measure, Mak and Chong throw Sun Li into the mix as Liu Bei's latest concubine Qi Lan, for whom Guan Yu has long-harboured romantic urges, and the stage is set for an emotionally-charged, high-octane adventure that remains consistently entertaining throughout.

While aspersions have been cast over Donnie Yen's suitability for the role of the great Guan Yu, based on his diminutive stature and questionable acting chops, there is no denying his technical prowess in a brawl. Whether going up against a legion of Yu Liang's soldiers or, in the film's finest sequence, engaging in a one-on-one alleyway spear fight with Andy On (on horseback!), he's at his entertaining best right here. Whatever qualms people had with Donnie Yen in LEGEND OF THE FIST, his work here should instantly dispel any concerns. His fights are fast, inventive and thrilling to watch, each one given a unique setting and graciously allowing Guan Yu's various adversaries time to shine. In one instance, Mak & Chong opt not to show us the skirmish at all, instead having a monumental battle take place, quite literally, behind closed doors. What detractors may call a cheat or concession to Donnie's diminishing abilities, is in fact a wonderfully-executed moment of levity in a film that, after a stop-start first act that endeavours to lay down a lot of history very quickly, delivers a solid hour of non-stop action.

Guan Yu is revered as a God to some degree in Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, with particular recognition awarded him in this part of the world by both the police and triads in equal measure. His exploits have been told and retold so many times over the past two millennia that any attempt to separate the man from the myth would be an exercise in futility and there's no denying Mak and Chong play fast and loose even with established facts here. However, THE LOST BLADESMAN is not trying to pass itself off as a history lesson, so much as a couple of hours of rip-roaring entertainment in the company of one of history's greatest badasses. Between the pair of them, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen divide the acting responsibilities up pretty evenly, Jiang downplaying Cao Cao's notorious villainy while Donnie...well, does Donnie, albeit with some stick-on facial hair that he plucks at dramatically from time to time. The rest of the cast are present either to fall under Donnie's blade or yearn for a forbidden love, and provided you don't ask any more than that, THE LOST BLADESMAN proves a surprising yet welcome success.

Storyline

Storyline
